The Aspire One (D250-1165), Acer has eliminated a considerable amount of the plastic of its predecessor, the Aspire One (10-inch), making it slightly lighter and only 0.8 inch thick. It's merely an aesthetic overhaul, though; it keeps the original Intel Atom parts and the below-average (89 percent) keyboard. Still, the street price remains constant at $300 ($350 for the six-cell configuration).

The Acer Aspire AS3810T (6415) ($900 street) isn't the first to sport a metallic chassis or the increasingly popular "chiclet" keyboard, but it may well be the new recipe for ultra-thin laptops. The AS3810T is part of Acer's new Timeline series, ushering in the value proposition that was uncommon in sleek ultraportables until now. With the help of Intel's latest Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processor, the AS3810T achieved a phenomenal 8 hours 40 minutes of battery life in tests.

The M2010 has one of the most vivid and color-rich 10-inch widescreens in the business, and the infinity-symbol design is easy on the eyes, but it isn't without flaws. I can forgive the 89 percent keyboard, since this netbook is aimed at classrooms and at kids, whose hands are presumably smaller than mine. The $449 (direct) price tag and low battery scores (with its three-cell battery), however, may be tough sells.

Big Mother could use some lessons in user-friendliness.
With a multifaceted, password-protected interface, parents can easily block Internet access or other online features that may be tempting to little ones, such as uploading and downloading files, surly URLs, e-mails, games, and chats. Or, parents can grant limited access by developing scheduled access times. Big Mother even allows you to limit the amount of uploaded and downloaded data by file sizes.

We like the variety of logging options: URLs, e-mails, games/chats, or FTPs. What we don't like is that rather than simply monitoring network PCs by username, this application uses host names and divides them into work groups. Its various options could be overwhelming to the not-so-computer-savvy mom or dad. Additionally, the short seven-day trial isn't exactly a help to those needing acclimation to the ins and outs featured. Still, though it is geared toward parents, this customizable software also could be an asset in the workplace.
