Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Unibody)
The Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch has been revered over the years by a nation of professional photographers and film editors, not to mention average media folks who can't get enough of this thin-bodied cinematic wonder. When the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Dual Graphics) and the MacBook 13-inch (Aluminum) launched with their "unibody" enclosures—in each case, a heavily promoted slab of aluminum that rids the frame of all detachable parts—a "uni-seventeen-incher" was clearly on the way. The Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Unibody) ($2,799 direct) is still the lightest and the prettiest media center laptop to house a maximum-resolution screen, and the changes are significant.

The MacBook 13-inch (Aluminum) couldn't come at a more crucial time for Apple. The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Dual Graphics, $2,499) is an amazing piece of design engineering, not just because Apple marketed the living daylights out of the manufacturing process, but because it looks and feels that way. In addition to a glass screen, a lighter and thinner aluminum chassis, and a multi-purpose touchpad, this thin-and-light also boasts dual graphics cards from nVidia.

Gateway laptops have excelled in two main areas: performance and competitive pricing. But while everyone else has been taking cues from Apple—placing industrial design at the top of their priority lists, experimenting with trendier metals, and using the latest post-processing techniques—Gateway hasn't put much effort into designing hot-looking laptops. (The one exception was the E-100M ultraportable, which debuted three years ago.) That may be changing, though. Its newest desktop replacement laptop—the MC7803u ($1,000 street)—is the best-looking one in the company's history.

Apple MacBook (Core 2 Duo processor 2.0GHz, 2GB, 13.3-inch TFT)
Since the shift to Intel's chipset, consumers have been waiting for an aluminum replacement for the 12-inch PowerBook G4. The model has finally arrived, though sporting a larger 13.3-inch display. Based on the same unibody design as the MacBook Air, the latest MacBook comes in two configurations--the midrange 2.0GHz model and the high-end 2.4GHz machine. Besides the processor speed, the difference is that only the latter unit comes with a backlit keyboard.
